We got back from Egypt in the early hours of Wednesday, slept at my parents’ house, and then drove back home in the afternoon so Wednesday was a write-off. Thursday it was too cold to run in the morning and then I was out all afternoon and evening, which brings us to…

Friday: As per Friday’s post, it was too cold in the morning to run. Having picked up some new tyres and inner-tubes for my basketball chair on Thursday, Ally and I decided to book an hour on the court at the local leisure centre that evening. We did some shooting and then a bit of 1-on-1.

Saturday: Archery in the morning. A few of us decided to shoot a Portsmouth (5 dozen arrows on a 60cm face at 20 yards) so it was pretty non-stop. Good score though, got a new PB so pretty happy…which is more than can be said for the afternoon’s run. I decided to ease myself back into it by just doing 5k, but still struggled. I got a stitch, my asthma kicked in and I lost the feeling in my toes and soles of my feet. It took a rather abysmal 31:25, but I’m glad I’ve got that over and done with. Hopefully the next one will be better.

Sunday: A slightly less than exciting session at basketball. There were only 5 of us there and Ally dropped out half way through. Hung around for a while afterwards to work on my shooting.

I’m back! Back to having to have the lights on in the middle of the day and being able to see your breath when you go outside…what happened to the weather while I was away? I’m sure it wasn’t this bad when I left.

Anyway, a good time was had by all and I’m both sad and relieved to be home. We got up to pretty much what you’d expect on a beach holiday, mostly lazing around the pool reading a book (or two), but I also managed some snorkeling in 4 different locations and a day trip into Cairo and Giza.

I didn’t take my running shoes in the end. My brother was there last year in September when the temperatures were in the mid-40s and I decided it wasn’t worth it. As it turned out, October was cooler and it was usually around 30 degrees just after sunset. I saw a fair few runners each day along the pavement beside the beach and occassionally got the itch to go and join them, though the bar usually called before I got too carried away :-)

So really the whole week was quite lazy – not that I’m complaining, but 7 days of high carb and low veg meals (all inclusive dinners seem to be more about surviving than calorie counting) have left me feeling a tad…puffy, even if it is all psychological :-)

I haven’t run since I got back as it’s been too cold for my asthma. As I’m writing this at 11.30am it’s still only 10 degrees outside. For the moment I’m going to have to start running in the afternoons or early evening, when it might be a little bit warmer, but my lack of gym membership or treadmill is starting to become a concern. I still have basketball to keep me going but ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Holiday

Yes, dear readers, I am leaving for sunnier climes. On Tuesday I’ll be off to Egypt with Ally, my parents, my brother and his girlfriend, for a week of sun, sea and pyramids…or something like that. I’ve always wanted to go to Egypt, and I haven’t been on a holiday for a few years, so I’m really looking forward to it.

Needless to say, the running will be taking a back seat next week. I had been thinking about taking my trainers just in case I fancied a run but that all depends on whether there’s any room left in my suitcase once I’ve packed everything else…and that’s pretty unlikely! Instead I’ll be swapping the pavement for the sea and doing a fair amount of swimming and snorkeling.

I’ll post on Monday, and will be back next Tuesday but I probably won’t post again until Friday 9th.
