Peculiar Product Test #3: Garmin Forerunner 405CX

June 17, 2009

I was fortunate enough to come into possession of one of the new Garmins a little while ago (thanks Al!) and it really does deserve a post of it’s own. While this particular piece of kit doesn’t seem ‘peculiar’ to me (as the title might suggest) I can see how other people might find a GPS watch for running quite odd (namely Scribs).

I had the Garmin Forerunner 305 first and loved that. Not only was the GPS a lot more accurate than the glorified pedometer in Nike+, but it also had the heart rate monitor. The screen was big enough that I could display 4 different things and still be able to read it easily. I’d often have the stop watch, heart rate, distance and pace when I was running and then stop watch, time of day, distance and speed when I was cycling. The size of the screen was also the biggest disadvantage. The unit itself is huge, meaning my little wrists were swamped by it and running was a tad lopsided. As a result I would only take Steve (the 305) out when I needed to measure a distance on a regular route and I felt guilty for not maximising it’s potential.

The 405CX is much smaller, but unfortunately not small enough to be worn as a regular watch (it displays the time in Sleep Mode instead of just turning off but needs charging every few days if using the GPS a lot). The face and surrounding strap (where the GPS is stored, what’s shown in the picture) is still too wide but this really is it’s only downfall, and as soon as Garmin make a GPS HRM that fits me I’ll be queueing to buy one.

So where to start? Well it took me a few days to come up with a name for the new Garmin. As you may have noticed from previous posts I called it ‘the CX’, which then became Charlie X-Ray, which was then shortened to Charlie. So the new Garmin is called Charlie. It does pretty much everything you could want. Turning it on to training mode it will pick up a satellite signal in seconds. Unlike Steve (the 305) which could take up to a few minutes, I’ve had Charlie take less than 2 seconds, no exageration.

It’s incredibly simple to use. I managed to set up my custom displays on the fly as I was about to start a run. Everything is controlled by touching the bezel, which works a bit like the scroll wheel on an iPod but doesn’t depress. When I’m running I have my distance, time and speed displayed on the screen. By tapping the bezel I can scroll through pre-set screens. Tap once and my heart rate will appear, tap again and I have a diagram of my ‘virtual partner’ (or imaginary friend in my watch, as Scribs calls it) – a virtual pacesetter, complete with time and distance you are ahead or behind by. The last tap will bring up the time of day.

I can also display any of about 35 other elements, in a combination of screens of my choice. I can work to heart rate zones and pre set routes. I can mark locations using the GPS and then use the feature to find my way back to one of these locations (I swear I’ve never got lost in the woods whilst running, regardless of what Ally might say!) I haven’t really begun to explore all the different things I can do with this thing, and that’s only the running setting, just wait til I get back on my bike!

10k run on Tuesday 16th

10k run on Tuesday 16th

When coming home I stop the timer, reset the fields ready for next time and put it on to time mode whilst I’m collapsed on the floor in a red sweaty heap stretching properly. When I take the watch back upstairs it’ll automatically send my run information to my PC (which I tend to leave on) due to the USB stick I have permanently plugged in. The Garmin Training Centre will display anything and everything that you might want to know. Pace and heart rate show up on the graph, but I can also add in HR as % of max, elevation, speed etc. There’s a whole table of information available as well. I have set my laps to 1km so I can get accurate times for each km (which you’ll see in Monday posts), as well as my average and max speed, calories burnt, average and max heart rate and total ascent and descent (for each km as well as a total).

Charlie does have a bit of a problem when going through tunnels and might randomly spit out that I’m running at 23km/h, but otherwise it’s pretty accurate. I’ve sat here for a few minutes trying to think of other things that are wrong with it (this ‘review’ is somewhat one-sided) but I can’t really fault it. The price is maybe a bit hefty but everyone should have a boyfriend that buys them graduation gifts!

Back Home

May 29, 2009

I’ve come home to visit my parents for the week. I haven’t been home since I stayed for a few days in February, so I thought it was about time. Running here is very different to Shelton. For starters, the town is named after a hill, which should give you some idea of what the terrain is like.

Finishing the 7th km in Brighton

Finishing the 7th km in Brighton

I know the area pretty well so I’ve been thinking up routes and then using Map It on the Nike+ website to see how long they are. It would appear that the easiest routes, as in those that don’t require me to run on the road or repeat the same road over and over, average at around 8kms. You’ll get the whole story on Monday anyway.

Monday and Wednesday I ran in and around the town. Thursday I decided to try running the promenade along Brighton seafront and invited Matt along. I’d always fancied running along there, it’s wide and flat with some breeze off the sea and it goes on forever so you don’t need to do laps.

I thought it was an ideal opportunity to have another go at a 10k, but Matt isn’t quite there yet so he decided to do the first three with me, have a break while I carried on to the 5km point and then join in again on the way back.

Taking a break at the 7k mark before Matt joined in. Don't let the clouds fool you, the heat was suffocating!

Taking a break at the 7k mark before Matt joined in. Don't let the clouds fool you, the heat was suffocating!

We started pretty slowly but I soon got into a good pace. The breeze coming off the sea was slightly against me on the way out there and gave a bit of a boost on the way back, but mostly just blew my hair into my face :-)

We finished in an hour and 7 minutes, according to my iPod, although how accurate the route was is up for debate (I ran about 100m past the half way point before turning around but it didn’t register as 10k until I had run back into the car park – 100m past where we’d started). On my own I reckon I could keep it to 1 hour 3 minutes, possibly less if I measured the route with my Garmin.

It was a good run, which I’m hoping to do again on Sunday, and will have to make sure that I do again whenever I come back to these parts.

6kms into the run and the hill to the windmills starts (they're there on top of the hill).

6kms into the run and the hill to the windmills starts (they're there on top of the hill).

This morning I decided to run to Jack and Jill, a pair of windmills that sit on the South Downs. Why I thought of this I have no idea…they’re over 8kms from my house and up a ridiculously steep hill. Either way, I set out this morning with my water bottle belt on and ran 3 towns over to get to the windmills.

The run to the bottom of the hill wasn’t too bad. I had to dodge some traffic and do some smaller hills before I got there but I was still feeling good. The pavement runs out at this point (one assumes that no one is stupid enough to want to walk or run up there) so I spent the next couple of kms attempting to avoid cars and lorries doing 50mph…

My run had degraded to a sort of shuffle by the time I had got to the top of the hill but I was just so glad that I had made it I didn’t care. I spent 5 minutes sitting on the grass and doing some stretches and then headed back down the hill again.

The view from the top of the hill looking back the way I had come.

The view from the top of the hill looking back the way I had come.

According to my shoes it was 16kms, according to Map It it was 16.4, but either way it took me 1 hour and 50 minutes. Quite possibly one of the most physically exhausting things I have done, my legs are aching, my back is aching and the twinge I’ve had in my knee is looking to annoy me. Tomorrow is going to be officially declared a rest day :-)

Last Week: w/c 18th May

May 25, 2009

Monday: The increasingly bipolar weather decided that it would be cold and rainy Monday morning so Claire and I went to the gym. I did a 9k in 54 minutes, which was tougher than I thought it would be, but I suppose that was only my third 9k run.

Tuesday: More rain so back to the gym. Did 6k on the exercise bike and then 6k on the treadmill (36 minutes). Lots of stretching and then just a couple of sets on some of the resistance machines.

Wednesday: Back to the gym with the intention of doing another 9k on the treadmill. I was having a bad asthma morning and underestimated how worn out my legs were from the past 2 days, so I got as far as 3k (which my shoes got wrong again) and decided to stop. I ran an extra k to recalibrate the Nike sensor, had a 2 minute break and then ran other 3k to finish off.

Thursday: I decided my legs needed a break so did some core strength and upper body weights in the gym with Claire.

That little black dot is me!

That little black dot is me!

Friday: I’d had enough of running in the gym. It’s fine for a while but it gets very boring and isn’t half as enjoyable as running outside. So, ignoring the wind, cold and rain, I headed out along the canal path with Claire on her bike as company. Unfortunately I managed to get a stitch during the 3rd km and so my 9km run/jog took me an hour and 2 minutes. It was good to be running outside again though.

Saturday: No running today as I had an archery competition which took all morning (and some of the afternoon).

Sunday: I check the weather forecast a fair bit so I had been looking forward to today’s sunshine for a few days now. It was up to around 14 degrees by the time I left at 10.10am but there was very little breeze so it felt a lot warmer once I got going (the sun reflects off the canal as well so I get added sunshine). I set out to do a 9k but I was still feeling strong at the half way point so I carried on for a bit longer. I knew my shoes were off (having checked them at the 2.5km marker and found they were 60m behind me) so I didn’t worry too much about aiming for a distance and just ran for the fun of it. Apparently I ran 10.9km, though I suspect it was a little further, in 1 hour and 14 minutes. I also have rather dodgy tan lines from my iPod arm band and RoadID :-)

Total Run: 41.9km

Today is the 3 month anniversary of this blog. Woo! I decided that it was time to commit to the blog and some of you will have already noticed that I’ve gone ahead and got rid of that pesky .wordpress in the URL. To celebrate the (sort of) landmark and new address I’m giving away a FREE running from zombies goody bag to the first 3 people to comment on this post. If you’re the first person to get a comment in then your goody bag will also have a few extras.

In addition to my new domain, I also have a contact email address now: sarah@runningfromzombies.com – Feel free to mail me for…whatever.

Last Week: w/c 11th May

May 18, 2009

Monday: Headed back outside for a 9km run along the canal path. First few kms were at a fair rate – a little over 5 mins per km, managed to unintentionally slow down around the 7th km and ended up with a time of 57 minutes. Still pretty happy with it, and it felt pretty good. Shame I’m going to be working all day Tuesday, it’s supposed to be sunny.

Wednesday: Tired and irritable, I needed to blow off some steam so I headed out for a 5k. The sun disappeared some time after 7am so it was overcast and windy by the time I was running. Stomped out to the half way mark in exactly 15 minutes, slowed it down a bit for the return journey, and then picked it up again in the last 400m for a finish of 31 minutes.

Thursday: No running but I did 3 hours if ice skating…I think that counts as a workout!

Friday: 3km on the treadmill playing around with different speeds as a warm up for a weight session. I actually cut the weights session short – wasn’t feeling it.

Total Run: 17km

My monthly Nike+ challenge with Matt started again on Monday. I get the impression he doesn’t think he’ll keep up – but then he’s not trying to train for an event so I don’t blame him. Seems to be making a good job of it so far though, last I checked he was already up to 13.5km. You can keep track of our progress here. Ally posted his weekly update last night and reported only 16km this past week. I think that’s 1-0 to me :-)

In other news, I’ve managed to maintain the same weight since last Monday. Though to be fair I haven’t really started eating properly. My bad.

Pssst! I’m going to be giving away free running from zombies goody bags at some point in the next few weeks. There are a limited number so make sure you check in every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning to be sure you don’t miss out!

Last Week: w/c 4th May

May 11, 2009

Exams are done and I’m now free from university (assuming I’ve passed) forever. I’ve spent a good portion of the last two weeks looking for a post-grad job but to no avail. I now have two months before graduation, in which to find suitable employment. Any ideas? :-)

Anyway, I’m blogging (and running) again! I shall be getting back into my Monday-Wednesday-Friday routine as of today.

Wednesday: Attempted a 9km run on the treadmill but it was absoloutely terrible. I think the lack of a proper meal the night before and only getting 4 hours of sleep really hindered my progress. My shoes were off again so when they said I had run 9km I had actually done 9.45. Total time was 1 hour, not including the 2 minute break I took at the 4km mark. Congrats to Baines though, who managed 4km of intervals. We then did some stretching and a short weights workout.

Thursday: No workout today, but Ally (my official sports massage therapist) gave my legs a massage. Should mean that they’re a lot better for stepping up the training later this week.

Sunday: Wary because of my dodgy attempt at 9km on Wednesday I decided to just do whatever I felt like when I got to the gym. Firstly attempted to recalibrate my nike+ sensor, then did 3km on the bike, 6km on the treadmill (though shoes were still off), some stretching, and then another attempt at recalibration. Running felt good so I’ll crank it up a bit in the coming week.

Total Run: 17km

Because I haven’t really had much of a chance to do as many long runs as I would have liked I’m going to restart my fortnight of 9km runs from today. I might even stretch it out to 3 weeks, depending on what I feel like and how many long runs I get in. I should still have plenty of time to work on my 10k before the big day. Need to get some kms under my belt though, I challenged Ally to a weekly distance battle :-) A new Nike+ challenge with Matt starts today as well…

What with my lack of exercise and eating waaaay too much whilst writing my dissertation and exam revision I now weigh 154lbs (70kg). I’m not normally concerned much with my weight but I could stand to lose a bit before July. This time last year, I was around the 158lb mark and decided much the same – to lose a few lbs before race day. I found that by keeping up the training and cutting down on the crappy food I had lost 10lbs by the 7th September (race day). So for the next few months I’m going to cut down on the rubbish and I’ll add a sentence on the end of my regular Monday posts to let you know how it’s going.

Last Week: w/c 20th April

April 27, 2009

Monday: Claire abandoned me for the uni library so I decided to do an outdoor run..and I’m so glad I did. I decided to do some work first and so didn’t get out the house until about 11am, by which time the sun was shining and it must have been 13 or 14 degrees. I did a great 8.5km in 54 minutes along the canal path. Having never run this far along there, only cycled it, I had plenty of time to take in all the sights that I never get to see when I’m going twice as fast on the bike. It really was a great experience.

Tuesday: Scribs joined me for what I’m now calling the weekly charity run (“taking the poor and needy out for exercise”). Accomplished 5.3km in 38 minutes.

Wednesday: Absolutely knackering run today. A very nice 13/14 degrees outside with a bit of a breeze – great running weather imo, but my shoes were a bit off on account of me attempting a negative split (running back faster than I ran out). Because the Nike+ sensor couldn’t pick up my increased stride length on the return journey I found myself at the end of my street but with the Nike man telling me I still had 500m to run. A quick sprint round the block (after a hill climb I’d like to add) left me exhausted. Slightly disappointingly, the [supposed] 8.5k still took me 58 minutes. I might have to take the Garmin out again and get a 5k marker on the canal route.

Saturday: My first outdoor archery competition of the season and, while not really requiring phsyical stamina (it was only 4 dozen arrows), it does take a bit of mental focus. Suffered a bit with a shoulder injury which I think I got on the Friday evening (a tear in my deltoid) but still finished with a score of 319.

Total Run: 22.3km

As you can see, I’ve had very little time for both running and blogging this week. My dissertation is handed in (finally) but now I have exams for the next 2 weeks. I haven’t got as far as writing my blog posts ahead of schedule like I’ve done before so I’m going to have to call a break to my usual Wednesday and Friday posts until the end of the exam period. Usual posts will recommence the week beginning 11th May. In the mean time I’ll still be tinkering around on here. You might have noticed the new Behind the Scenes page, which I’ll be finishing off in my free time.

If you haven’t already, pop over to my Guest Book and let me know what you’d like to see more of on the blog. Until next week!

Last Week: w/c 13th April

April 20, 2009

Quite a poor week for running. I don’t have much of an excuse really except I’m busy trying to get my dissertation done and I went back to archery this week (Friday and Saturday).

Tuesday: Scribs decided to join me for an outdoor run and, not knowing just how far his little legs might take him, we turned back at the chimney (2.5k point). We finished the 5k in 36 minutes, which I think was pretty good for someone that doesn’t run.

Wednesday: Had already decided to join Claire in the gym but it was just as well because I woke up to a thunderstorm and I know I never would have dragged myself out into that. Did my first 8.5k on the treadmill in just under 52 minutes. My 60 minute 10k is looking more and more likely, which is great.

Friday: Back in the gym. Did a 20 minute 3k with the treadmill at a 2 degree incline. Swiftly followed by an immense weights session.

Sunday: Woke up to a balmy 7 degrees and so decided to go back to the gym. Did an 8.5k workout, which actually ended up at 8.75k, in 54.5 minutes.

Total run: 25km

My monthly challenge with Matt ended this week. The final score wasn’t quite as close as last month, let’s just hope I haven’t put him off :-) The Nike Men vs Women challenge ended yesterday too. I logged 141.8km for the women’s team, we still lost. Next year though… :-)

Good luck to those running Boston today.

Easier than Blogging

April 15, 2009

The title is a reference to a phrase that Scribs sometimes uses in his blog; “easier than writing” (in reference to a rather short blog post, most of which is usually a picture of some kind). Today you are going to be deprived of even that. Unfortunately, time is against me. As is my dissertation (which doesn’t seem to want to be written) and my exam revision (which hasn’t even started). Instead I shall leave you with the ultimate in motivational Nike+ ads; the one that inspired me to get the Nike+ Sports Kit (I’m an advertiser’s dream). Bonus points if you recognise the narrator guy.

Last Week: w/c 30th March

April 6, 2009

Wednesday: My first 8k. Went really well actually, I was obviously having a good morning :-) Took 48.5 minutes.

Thursday: Another 8k. Felt a bit wobbly after 4k but carried on til the end. Just under 49 minutes.

Friday: Did a 17 minute 3k as a warm up for weights. Have been ignoring resistance work since my mileage went up, should probably see to that.

Sunday: 8k again. 48 minutes, which was pretty good, but I did stop for a couple minutes at half way in an attempt to get rid of a stitch. Props to Claire for doing 3k of intervals, nice one :-)

Nike+ challenges are going well. As of yesterday I was whooping Matt 86 to 41k, was 14th out of 55 in the 300 miles in 300 days challenge, and 30th out of 72 in the Marathon Multiplier (210k in a month). Men vs Women still isn’t working for us – 557,106 vs 225,854k.

I also got my free Nike+ Men vs Women long sleeve tee in the post on Friday. I got an email from them last week (as did, I assume, anyone that’s logged enough miles in the challenge) saying that the first however many to reply would get a free tee. Well I can’t pass up the opportunity for free stuff so I’m now the proud owner of a shirt that says “I love you. But I will crush you.” on the front and “Join the men vs women challenge at nikeplus.com” on the back.

My gym membership has now expired so I’m going to attempt running outside again. Expect some longer times as I struggle :-)

Due to end-of-degree time restraints you might find that my posts are getting shorter and shorter. However, with my readship ever in mind I asked running machine Matt “The Flash” Fowle to entertain the masses while I plod on with my dissertation.

So here we have…Matt’s story.
