Egypt

October 9, 2009

I’m back! Back to having to have the lights on in the middle of the day and being able to see your breath when you go outside…what happened to the weather while I was away? I’m sure it wasn’t this bad when I left.

Freediving while out by a coral reef.

Anyway, a good time was had by all and I’m both sad and relieved to be home. We got up to pretty much what you’d expect on a beach holiday, mostly lazing around the pool reading a book (or two), but I also managed some snorkeling in 4 different locations and a day trip into Cairo and Giza.

I didn’t take my running shoes in the end. My brother was there last year in September when the temperatures were in the mid-40s and I decided it wasn’t worth it. As it turned out, October was cooler and it was usually around 30 degrees just after sunset. I saw a fair few runners each day along the pavement beside the beach and occassionally got the itch to go and join them, though the bar usually called before I got too carried away :-)

So really the whole week was quite lazy – not that I’m complaining, but 7 days of high carb and low veg meals (all inclusive dinners seem to be more about surviving than calorie counting) have left me feeling a tad…puffy, even if it is all psychological :-)

I haven’t run since I got back as it’s been too cold for my asthma. As I’m writing this at 11.30am it’s still only 10 degrees outside. For the moment I’m going to have to start running in the afternoons or early evening, when it might be a little bit warmer, but my lack of gym membership or treadmill is starting to become a concern. I still have basketball to keep me going but ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Holiday

September 25, 2009

Yes, dear readers, I am leaving for sunnier climes. On Tuesday I’ll be off to Egypt with Ally, my parents, my brother and his girlfriend, for a week of sun, sea and pyramids…or something like that. I’ve always wanted to go to Egypt, and I haven’t been on a holiday for a few years, so I’m really looking forward to it.

Needless to say, the running will be taking a back seat next week. I had been thinking about taking my trainers just in case I fancied a run but that all depends on whether there’s any room left in my suitcase once I’ve packed everything else…and that’s pretty unlikely! Instead I’ll be swapping the pavement for the sea and doing a fair amount of swimming and snorkeling.

I’ll post on Monday, and will be back next Tuesday but I probably won’t post again until Friday 9th.

Last Week: w/c 17th August

August 24, 2009

Last week was all about getting my fitness levels back up to scratch without overdoing the running and risking hurting my knee again.

Monday: Went to Ally‘s gym with him and signed up for a 2 week membership. Stuck around for a bit and did a short workout – 20 mins on the bike at around 80% max HR, 10 mins on the treadmill (just over a mile) to test my knee, and then a very brief stint in the freeweight section.

Tuesday: Back to the gym, just for cardio this time. I did an hour on the bike at 70% max HR and 3k on the treadmill at 6 min/km pace. Feeling the effects of too long doing nothing. Felt great when I was done though!

Wednesday: Third day at the gym. I ran a 33 minute 5k (6 minutes on, 1 minute off), stretched, did a couple of the resistance machines then onto the bike, where I did 30 minutes at 65% max HR and then 10 minutes at around 82% max.

Thursday: In my attempt to get the most out of my 2 week gym membership I decided to try out the pool. It’s quite small, especially as aqua class was on but there were only a few swimmers so plenty of room. Not knowing how long the pool was I kept going til I ran out of time (Ally was in the gym upstairs). I found out later that the pool was 20m long so had covered 1km.

Saturday: Had intended to go to archery today but a bad night’s sleep and a niggling shoulder problem persuaded me to stay at home. In the end I decided that a run might make me feel better so I headed out with the intention of doing a bit further than Wednesday’s 5k, but not by much. In the end I did a 6.5k route in 43:28. I really opened up my stride in the last 400m, pushing around 14-15kmph and it felt really good. Starting to feel more confident about the race.

Sunday: Basketball today. Not quite as good as last week, I couldn’t quite seem to get the picks, but a good time nonetheless. Annoying blister on my thumb from the push rim :-(

Total Run: 16.2km

As you can see, I tend to do my HR zone training on the bike in the gym rather than running…purely so I can concentrate on running instead of looking at my watch. Throughout the week I’ve done a bit more research on heart rate zones and talked to Ally about it. At some point I plan to go back to the track and try to work out my max HR more accurately.

Back in the Swing of Things

August 21, 2009

As I said in Monday’s post, I joined Ally‘s gym for a 2 weeks as part of some promotion they’re doing. I’ve been there for the past 4 days (today is a day off) and liking it so far. My fitness levels obviously suffered when I stopped running and I’ve tried to ease myself back into it at the gym with short treadmill sessions, time on the exercise bike and swimming. My knee seems to be a lot better and hasn’t hurt – even during the 5k I did on the treadmill a few days ago.

The gym itself (a Bannatyne’s) is really nice. Having only ever been part of a leisure centre gym and the uni gym, I don’t have a whole lot to compare it to, but it’s clean and well maintained, the staff are friendly, and it seems to have everything you could want from a gym. I’ve yet to try out any of the classes, but there’s plenty on, and I hope to get a spinning class in next week.

So things are looking good. I’m still dubious about how well I’ll do at the Lichfield 10k, which is in just 16 days, but I’m still determined to finish it. Sunday morning I hope to go for a 7-8km run on the roads around home and hope that will kick start thing back to the way they were.

Bench Time

August 5, 2009

As I’m sure you picked up from Monday’s post, my knee is still dictating my exercise, and at the moment it has me sitting on the bench. I seem to be doing a lot of non-running at the moment, with my injury-enforced rest for the past couple of weeks and the time off I took when I was ill at the start of June.

I’m still planning on doing 2 weeks at Ally‘s gym, but I’m going home for a few days next week so won’t join until I get back so I can make the most of it. In the mean time, I’m doing my press ups 3 times a week and playing basketball on Sundays. Yesterday, Ally and I found an outdoor court attached to a community centre so hopefully we’ll be able to play basketball outside of the weekly training sessions.

Other than that, I don’t have a whole lot to tell you. Not running is pretty frustrating (especially when I see runners go past the window) but even though my knee is starting to feel better I know I have a while before I can get back out on it. In the mean time I’ll be entertaining myself by reading the latest Runners World and looking forward to a swim at the gym in a few weeks.

Independently Wealthy Runner

July 24, 2009

A little while ago I came across this blog post, which was actually inspired by this one, and was about what your day would be like if you were independently wealthy and had no job. Obviously, the two people who wrote those posts were runners and so a large percentage of their day was taken up with running.

When I run I tend not to think of anything in particular, I just let my mind wander, but the other day I started to think – what would my day be like if I was wealthy enough not to need a job and had no desire to start one? I suppose it would be pretty similar to my day right now! Though the added security of having a bank account without a minus sign in front of the numbers would mean that I wouldn’t spend my afternoons job hunting and I could afford to join a gym, go to a pool/have a pool built in my luxury house etc.

The posts I mentioned above start their days early – one with a run at sunrise and one with a run before. While I love the idea of getting up before everyone else to get a run in before the morning rush hour, I couldn’t really do it living here. If it’s anything less than about 11 degrees (that’s about 52 in Fahreneit) then my asthma will stop me from running and, living in England, there’s a good chance that it’s going to be less than 11 degrees for at least 3 quarters of the year at sunrise. Therefore, in order for me to fully embrace the hypothetical question of what my day would be like as an independently wealthy runner then we first have to assume that I’ve taken my wealth and moved somewhere warmer (you can tell that I have a lot of time to think on runs can’t you?).

O I would get up early, have breakfast and do normal morning stuff like read the news and my e-mails.
O Go for a run once it was light but before it was busy. Morning sessions would be the hard work, so intervals, fartleks, tempo and long runs.
O Back home for a Shake, stretch and shower.
O Catch up on social networking sites and other blogs. Read, tidy, do anything that needed doing.
O Lunch. Something small coz I like to snack in the afternoon.
O Afternoons would have to be varied depending on what I felt like at the time. I’d like to say I could get some cross training in, such as some resistance work or swimming, but at my current fitness level that would have to replace one of my late afternoon runs instead. So afternoons would be spent learning new things, taking a class or picking up a new hobby. There’s a lot out there that I would like to do – learn the piano, ride a horse, do a photography class etc.
O Late afternoon run. This would be the easy run, doing whatever distance I felt like. This could be moved to after dinner if I didn’t have evening plans. Could also be replaced with swimming, cycling, weights, archery or basketball…or maybe something more adventurous – like days out rock climbing or surfing.
O Dinner. Either prepared by me during the afternoon or my nutritionist/chef :-)
O Evening at home, or out with Ally.
O Early night (and some good quality sleep!)

In depth? Yes. Too much information? Probably. Good fun? Definitely. Think about it and then either comment or repost on your own blog, I’d be interested to read it.

Last Week: w/c 6th April

April 13, 2009

Haven’t really run much this week, but don’t fret because I’ve been doing other things! Which brings me to the reshuffle of my ‘last week’ posts. Apparently these other sports have been complaining about being relegated to the end of the post and so from now on they’ll be listed in chronological order along with my running.

Taking a break on the bridge.

Taking a break on the bridge.

Monday: Claire and I decided to go for a bike ride in the morning. It was too cold for me to run outside but not too bad for cycling. We went the furthest we’ve been together – 25km – to the outskirts of Stone and back. Took about 130 minutes overall, which isn’t too bad considering the terrain. Hopefully when the exams are over we can take a whole day out to cycle as far as we can :-)

Tuesday: So much for outdoor running. I got up and it was cold and overcast so I went to the gym instead. Bit of a wobbly 8k due to yesterday’s bike ride. Finished in 48.5 minutes, though shoes were a bit off again so technically I only ran 7.91km.

Wedesday: A resistance day today. I intended to recalibrate my shoes again before I start running outside but the treadmills were turned off in the gym so I used the bike and the rower to warm up. Felt distinctly unsweaty when I got home so I spent half an hour on the Wii Fit, not that it actually helped, but it was fun :-)

Thursday: I finally went back to the pool, after I’ve been saying I would since Christmas. Swam 1km but it was probably more for all the people dodging I had to do. You’d think they’d put the lane ropes up with that many people there. I told Chris (who was manager in the afternoon) that he would need to sort it out before I swam again (ah, the joys of working there!)

Saturday: Another 8k…well, it wasn’t really 8k because my shoes were off again (I can’t work out whether it’s my stride length that changes or the sensor is just rubbish). I actually went 8.4km in just under 52 minutes. However this was made marginally better by the fact that Claire and I got into the gym for free. Thank you gym man.

Sunday: As per my last post, I went camping just outside Stratford for the weekend. Come Sunday morning I was tempted not to run because I was tired from a night in the tent, it was raining, and Ally was ill (and I felt I should do the good girlfriend thing). In the end running won out and with just a vague idea of where I was going I ran from the campsite to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and back. Was a very nice run actually. Only about 7k round trip but the miles were hardly noticed as I was too busy taking in the scenery. The first part was a road but I found the canal path and that was quieter (and lot prettier – see pic). Walked it again today and it seemed to take forever!

Total run: 23km

Other Exercise

March 20, 2009

I love running. I’m guessing that wasn’t much of a shock, seeing as you’re reading a training blog about running. I love running, but I do other things – to keep me interested, to get a good full-body work out, to be flexible in my exercise if I have an injury that prevents me running.

As you’ve probably gathered, I like to play wheelchair basketball with my boyfriend Ally and the West Brom FC Wheelchair Basketball Club. This is great for me as it’s the only team sport I play, is a good cardio workout when I have an injury (which is more often than I’d like), and works the upper body (which running doesn’t really do). Of course, it also means I get to play with Al, which is good.

GT Aggressor - Mine's a bit muddier

GT Aggressor - Mine's a bit muddier

I also like to cycle, particularly off road. I have a GT Aggressor mountain bike which I like to take down the canal path in better weather. I am a member of the gym at the SSMSC and use their resistance machines and free weights at least once a week. I’m an archer, and shoot 3 times a week. While it’s not exercise in the same league as running, it works your arms and back and requires concentration and hand eye co-ordination (and yes, it is a sport). I’m only a few miles away from the local swimming pool and have been known to go for a swim when I have the time. I have a Wii Fit (though one could argue that this doesn’t constitute exercise), a FitDeck and a Pilates DVD. I think you get the picture.

What amazes me is the availability of all this and yet there are so many people out there that don’t do any exercise. Contrary to Scribs’ Dad’s belief that exercise is bad for you :-), there are many benefits. If you need reminding then check out my post ‘Why Run?’. No time? No money? There are so many ways around this, just google it or comment this post. You don’t want to wait until you’re ill/overweight/having a mid life crisis to start exercising. Start now, right now…well, maybe when you’ve finished reading this post. I value my health and fitness quite highly, and I certainly don’t want to take it for granted.

What’s your excuse?
